Ever since picking up the camera, it was the most encountered question. Be it the model and brand of your camera or the lens that I’m using, I tend to be hesitant in telling them the answer directly. Nothing to hide, but rather I just want them to know the camera is just a tool and not something that will turn you into a professional photographer overnight just by owning it.
As quoted in a recent comment over at Digital Photography School:
Saying a Camera takes Nice Pictures is like Saying a Guitar Plays Nice Melodies.
This analogy will probably ring better to more people as the learning curve to playing a guitar is definitely much steeper than that of wielding a camera. Given the low cost of the entry level DSLRs and the popularity of point-and-shoots in recent years, everyone can just hit the shutter button to capture and image anytime. The thing is, regardless of how much you spend on that state-of-the-art DSLR and L-Lens, if you do not have the basic knowledge and aptitude in handling that piece of equipment you aren’t going to get images like those of Chase Jarvis or Joe McNally shooting in Auto mode.
I do admit that I have gear lust and on the midst of saving to meet my upgrade plan by the end of the year. But for those who thinks owning a high-end DSLR will drastically improve their photography, please think again. Yes, a good camera helps to improve the quality, but that is after you have learnt to really max out the limit of your current equipment. Even the most basic equipment such as the iPhone 3G can produce stunning images with proper handling and post-processing. Remember, just like a veteran guitarist, there is also the amount of time devoted learning the trade and garnering experience. Better equipment may help you to achieve higher quality products, but it all depends on you first to achieve a decent quality.
Long overdue selects from the grad shoot done last month. It was a fun shoot although very tiring to try and run about 3 to 4 locations within 3 hours.
Haven’t been shooting recently due to the changes that have been going on and uncertain time schedules. But please feel free to drop me messages with any interest for shoots. Will be hoping to be able to pull off a fashion studio shoot within the next 2 months.
Graduation is one of the most important days of our lives. And to remember your closest friends in University down in 20 years or so would be quite a daunting task. A grad shoot will be the best way to record and keep the memories of the people whom you have spent nights doing projects with or spent nights getting trashed at Zouk or Butter Factory. Dressed in Harry-Potterish fashion, this group of wild and enthusiatic Bizcom students of SMU went off around the school premises which they spent their last 4 years in and recorded some memories which hopefully will stay with them for the rest of their lives. Here’s a belated congratulations to all you guys!
It was a belated celebration that we had for Yuanru and this time was on National Day itself. It was another chance for a rare gathering over this long weekend.
This was the free GIGANTIC ice milk tea that we had. Was kinda skeptical of the size initially when I saw it in the menu, but when it came to the table.. I was sold – Largest Ice Milk Tea I’ve ever seen.
Birthday card and birthday girl.
We adjourned to Clarke Quay for some drinks and some chill-out music. Stayed out till the wee-hours talking about life currently at work and also about what life would be in the future.
It was a short but fun shoot of Bizcom’s graduating students last Sunday. Just a short preview video that was made on that night itself. Final selections and production should be ready by this weekend.
All packed and ready to go. Got my camera gear all ready, and my luggage half filled. Just doing the final most important thing now, that is to clear and backup my portable hard disk for bringing to Taiwan with me. Thanks to RJ for offering to bring his lappy over =). First true photography trip for me and it’s pretty exciting come to think of it. Just have to pray for good weather over there. Rachel was saying it has been raining over there the past couple of days, so I really hope the bad weather does not drag on although rain does give the scenes a more emo look, but that’s besides the point.
Hope to update with iphone pictures on facebook as often as possible. Stay tuned.
It’s been awhile since the last update. It’s finally all over and I’m just trying to chill for the time being before getting down to serious job search and updates of the site and portfolio. Anyway, been having cravings for all kinds of food during the exam weeks and now is a great time to enjoy them. First up is crabs and today a couple of friends and myself wandered down to Outram to feast on this gigantic delicacy. Curry crabs are their speciality, and it certainly didn’t disappoint. A picture says a thousand words, and a post is always made better with a picture. So here’s 2.
Really appreciate friends and family who actually spent time and bought me small tokens. It was really really heartwarming and thanks to all. It’s been a rollercoaster start to the year but I am thankful for the people around me who kept me going. I tend to take alot of things for granted and can’t express my feelings and gratitude. Just know deep down inside, I really am grateful.
Tomorrow marks the mid-20 mark. With the recent visit to ichiban at Esplanade, it was really inevitable to have that tinge of sweet memories flooding back. Not wishing for anything, because perhaps no expectations mean less disappointments.
